CLASSROOM PLACEMENT REQUESTS
Parents are invited to submit their 2016-2017 classroom placement requests to Mr. Carruthers via email (mcarruthers@deltasd.bc.ca).  The deadline for these requests is Thursday, June 2nd.  If you have already submitted a request but have not received a reply via email, we ask that you please re-submit your message to ensure that your input is considered.

SPORTS DAY

Sports Day at Hawthorne Elementary School is on Friday, June 3rd and we hope that you can join us for the fun. Students are invited to decorate bikes, trikes, wagons, skateboards, scooters, or other wheeled conveyances to participate in the Wheels Parade which will start at 9:25 a.m.  The Ocean Adventures theme consists of four colours GREEN (Octopus), Yellow (Nemos), Blue (Narwhals) and Red (Pirates).  Students are invited to dress up according to their team’s theme however please keep in mind that students will be very active throughout the day.  A schedule will be sent home to parents early next week but please note that we typically dismiss students at around 2:15pm.  Parents are reminded to refrain from smoking on the school grounds while watching Sports Day events and we request that you please leave your dogs at home.

In case of poor weather, Sports Day will be held on Monday, June 6th.  Postponement of Sports Day, if necessary, will be announced on CKNW 980 and in an email sent to families.  Students’ Sports Day food orders will be served on Friday, June 3rd even if Sports Day is postponed; however, we hope to have the concession stand open on the Monday.

The 2016-2017 school calendar has officially been released to the community.  Hopefully this will assist families with their planning for next year.  The calendar will also be posted on our website.

TRACK and FIELD
Congratulations to all of our staff and students who enjoyed a very successful regional track meet on Tuesday, May 10. Hawthorne was represented by over 100 intermediate students and 8 staff members.  It was a very proud day for our school and over 70 students qualified for the district track meet scheduled for May 19 at South Delta Secondary.   You can view the entire list of qualifiers at the bottom of this blog entry.  Go Hawks!

MOVING?
Please contact Mrs. Page at the office (cpage@deltasd.bc.ca) if your family is considering a change of schools next year.  This information is an important part of our planning for the 2016-2017 school year.  Thank you in advance for your consideration.

CLASSROOM PLACEMENTS:  2016-2017
In the coming weeks, our teaching staff will be meeting to create tentative class lists for next year.  The classes will be determined by considering the following factors:
  • Learning styles and strengths
  • What the child can do in relation to the program
  • Degree of independence in work habits
  • Social and personal needs
  • Age and physical maturity
  • Previous year's placement
  • Previous teacher's input
  • Parent input / requests
  • Establishing a balanced group academically
  • Male/Female balance
  • Friendship groupings
  • Equalizing class size
  • Siblings/Twins
  • Special needs
  • Medical needs
If you have some information that you would like to include in this process,  please forward a note to Mr. Carruthers at the office or correspond via email at mcarruthers@deltasd.bc.ca. We would only ask that you please refrain from making a "teacher" request and focus on what you believe to be the best learning environment for your child.  Thank you in advance for your attention to this.

PARENT TEA
Your Hawthorne staff would like to thank parents for all that they do to support the school throughout the year.  With this in mind,  we are hosting a Parent Volunteer Tea on Tuesday, May 24 from 2-3pm in the library.  Please come and join the Hawthorne Staff for a refreshment.  As this is an adult only function, if you require childcare in the multipurpose room, please let your child’s teacher know. Please RSVP (via your child’s Planner) by May 16.  We look forward to seeing you there!
