TRACK AND FIELD
Students and staff began training this week for the track and field season.  Coaches have been working with students in a number of areas:  sprints, distance, relays, long jump, shot put and softball throw.  Our first "mini-meet" will take place at 3:15pm on Tuesday, April 22nd at Delta Senior Secondary.  This will be an opportunity for some of our students to practice on the track but only a few events will be run:  100m sprints for gr. 6/7, 60m Shuttle and 60 m sprint for our gr. 4/5 students.   The regional track meet is scheduled for Tuesday, May 6th with the district event taking place on Thursday, May 15th.  We hope that your schedule allows you to attend some of these events to support the team.  Thank you to all of our coaches and special thanks to Mrs. Robinson for coordinating our efforts!

MOVING?
Please contact Mrs. Page at the office (cpage@deltasd.bc.ca) if your family is considering a change of schools next year.  This information is an important part of our planning for the 2014-2015 school year.  Thank you in advance for your consideration.

CROSSING GUARDS
Mrs. Butcher (mornings) and Mrs. Barnes (afternoons) will be sharing the adult crossing guard duties for the balance of the school year.   We are very thankful to them for stepping forward after the passing of Mrs. Wilde.   Mrs. Butcher and Mrs. Barnes are parents at Hawthorne and their positive spirit will serve Hawthorne well.

BIKE SAFETY SESSION
The Pedalheads organization (www.pedalheads.com) is offering a free "bike safety clinic" for Hawthorne families. They will be hosting the clinic after school on Wednesday, May 7th at 3:15pm.  Families are encouraged to participate together and you are asked to contact our parent volunteer, Mrs. Sigouin (helen.sigouin@gmail.com) by Friday, April 25th.

A number of our students have spent the last few weeks preparing the Delta School District's Math Celebrations event.  Our Hawthorne will join other South Delta elementary schools tomorrow afternoon to test their math skills and tackle some challenging word problems.  Special thanks to Mrs. Brown for coordinating our efforts.

We held our school challenge where the 3 teams competed to see who would become the  Hawthorne champs. The Book Explorers won this level and went on to compete at the Ladner Level. RECREATION PASSES
Delta Parks and Recreation is currently offering "drop-in" passes for 2-18yr olds for just $20. The passes are on sale now and valid from June 26 - September 1. You can pick them up at your local recreational center.

TRADES FAIR
You are invited to attend the 2nd Annual Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair which will be takingplace on April 14th at the Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta from 9am-8pm.  This is a unique and exciting event that gives hands-on experience with dozens of potential career paths.  We encourage you to bring your child(ren) with you to the event. All grade 7 and 10 students are already attending the fair during the school day. For older children and teenagers this is a great opportunity to educate themselves about the many meaningful, well-paying and fulfilling jobs available in the trades and technical areas.  For younger children, childminding is available from 5-8pm and a food truck will be on site during the evening hours.
The Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair is spearheaded by the Corporation of Delta in partnership with the Delta School District, Vancouver Community College, BCIT, Kwantlen Polytechnic University and local employers. The event is incredibly interactive, featuring ‘Try a Trade’ activities and dynamic presentations on the main stage. The Delta School District will also have a career booth at the event.

We invite you to have a look at the Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair website for more information: www.delta.ca/careerfair

NANCY WILDE
As you are likely aware of by now,  Hawthorne lost a valued member of the school community during spring break. Nancy Wilde,  our long-serving crossing guard, died on Friday March 21st.  Nancy was a caring member of our staff who greeted everyone with a smile and warm hello. She was a strong voice for traffic safety and worked closely with the Delta Police to make our school entrance as safe as it could be. Nancy also worked with our PAC and school board staff to institute changes to our roundabout that were designed to increase traffic flow and reduce hazards for our students.  She will be missed.  Hawthorne honoured her memory during our assembly today.

TALENT SHOW
On Friday March 14th we hosted our Talent Show and were treated to a great variety of performances.  Our participants are to be commended for their efforts and the positive risk-taking that they modelled for the rest of the school.  Special thanks to our hosts (Ava Manzur and Jack Morgan) along with our sound crew (Carson Gray and Levi Froude). Well done Hawthorne!

Talent Show Participants:

Tiffany Leung,  Chloe Koekemoer, Ryan Begg, Desiree Berry-Tilley, Keily Hutt, Claire Peters, Morgan Regalado, Hayden Smith, Tyler Bryce, Harvir Panesar, Taylor Butcher, Caitlin Jerret, Troy Fedorak, Autumn Bak, Caden Pacaud, Charley Pacaud, Sebastian Saddul, Arik Aulik, Riley Arlit, Sena Kholmatov, Aidan Pau, Nathan Pannell, Kailyn Ives, Michael Norcott, Cameron Ferguson, Nicole Ratzlaff, Jacob Broad, Jace Hastings, Matt Wilkinson, Skye-Ann Persad

VSO CONNECTS
We are pleased to announce that Hawthorne will be enjoying a second year of the VSO Connects school program.  This will involve a number of visits by various musicians as they introduce our students to orchestral music and a variety of instruments.  Our program will also feature a "Meet the Maestro" assembly hosted by the VSO conductor, Bramwell Tovey.  We will be hosting this assembly on Tuesday, April 29th at 9am and parents are welcome to join us.

REVERSE LUNCH
Last month we surveyed our grade 3-7 students for their opinion on the reverse lunch that we instituted on Fridays since December.  Of the 208 students polled,  74% were opposed to a continuation of reverse lunches.  With this data, combined with staff feedback,  we have decided to discontinue reverse lunches.  We found the benefits of reverse lunch were balanced by the drawbacks.  Our students are left feeling as though they have been heard.

COIN DRIVE
Hawthorne's "Me to We" student committee is planning a coin drive to start next week.  We are raising fund in support of a sister school in Uganda.  We hope to provide them with clean drinking water, medicine, eye glasses, shoes and many other items in support of their daily life.   Our efforts are being coordinated with the ICEF Canada (http://icefcanada.org) and we are hoping to collect dimes on Monday, quarters on Tuesday, loonies on Wednesday and twoonies on Thursday.  Thank you in advance for your support of this initiative.
