COIN DRIVE
Hawthorne's "Me to We" student committee is planning a coin drive for next week. All proceeds will be donated to Tekera Primary school in Uganda. This is the second year of our commitment to Tekera and our goal is to raise $2000 in support of their efforts. We are asking for donations of nickels, dimes, quarters, loonies and twoonies. A party will be provided for the primary and intermediate classes with the highest total of donations. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
AUTISM SPEAKS and LIGHT IT UP BLUE
Light It Up Blue is a unique global initiative to help raise awareness about the growing public health concern that is autism. This event was launched by Autism Speaks in 2010 in support of World Autism Awareness Day which takes place each year on April 2. On this day, over 3000 structures around the world will be illuminated in blue to shine a bright light on autism. We would like Hawthorne to participate in this day by having staff and students wear blue. Students will be reminded of the details when we return from Spring Break.

Hawthorne will be hosting its annual Talent Show on Thursday, March 12th at 1:45pm. If your child is participating, please ensure that he/she is prepared with their proper equipment or music for each of the rehearsal times. We hope that your schedule allows you to attend.
HOMEWORK AT HAWTHORNE
We are planning to create some homework guidelines for teachers, students and parents. With this in mind, we have designed a parent survey to gather input. You can find the survey at this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KYNRRD9. This link will closed in two weeks and our staff will then sift through the feedback. Thank you to those families who have already responded.
PINK SHIRT DAY
On February 25th students and staff were wearing pink to show that we are all working together to prevent bullying in our school, communities and online. This initiative began in a Nova Scotia high school when a boy was called "gay" after wearing a pink shirt to school. His friends and others decided to wear pink shirts the next day to take a stand against bullying. At Hawthorne we work closely with students, staff and parents to minimize the impact of bullying at our school. We want every child to attend school without the threat of verbal, physical and psychological abuse. If you should ever have concerns regarding bullying please contact your child's teacher or Mr. Carruthers at the office.
