SPRING FAIR
Our PAC members, led by the efforts of Kyla Pitman and Kim Barnes, are busy at work planning the 2017 edition of Hawthorne's Spring Fair. This event has been established as a great tradition for our school and we are looking forward to a night full of fun on Friday, May 12. Please note the following important dates and deadlines:
- April 10 to April 21: Pick a Jar Collection *All jars due by April 21st
- April 24 to May 5: Raffle Tickets on Sale *All tickets due back (sold or unsold) by May 5th
- May 1 to May 5: Pre-sale Concession Tickets on Sale *Forms due back by May 5th
- May 11 to May 12: Cake Walk Donations *Donations can be dropped off in Multi-purpose room
- May 12: SPRING FAIR!!
We hope that you and your family can make plans to join us on what should be a great night at Hawthorne!
As in past years, we will be recognizing a number of students with year-end awards. Typically this group would consist of grade 4-7 students however this year it will only involve our grade 5-7 classes as the new reporting procedures are not compatible with the awards criteria. Next year, every class at Hawthorne will be engaged with the new reporting guidelines and we will adjust our awards accordingly in the fall. In the meantime, you can view the current criteria that teachers will be referring to for this year.
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
o Student
must hold a B or A average over the course of the school year in: Mathematics,
Language Arts, Social Studies & Science.
EFFORT AWARD
o Student
must receive a “G” in every subject over the last two terms of the school year.
ATHLETIC AWARD
o Student
must consistently demonstrate a positive attitude and good sportsmanship.
o Grade
4- 7 students must receive an A or B average in P.E. over the course of the
school year
o Gr.
6-7 students must participate in at least 2 school teams (volleyball,
basketball, track)
CITIZENSHIP AWARD
o Student
must be friendly and kind to peers.
o Student
must be inclusive of peers and works well with them.
o Student
is engaged with school activities and opportunities.

demonstrates a number of problem-solving strategies.

DRESS CODE
With warmer temperatures looming (we hope:), students are often tempted to wear beach clothes to school. Please help us to maintain an age-appropriate dress code for all grades at Hawthorne by ensuring that strapless, spaghetti-strapped, midriff-like tops and “too-short” shorts or skirts are not worn to school. The midriff should be covered at all times. As well, T-shirts with contentious slogans may be deemed inappropriate. We wish to work with the parent community in helping to ensure the students wear clothing that is respectful of and appropriate to the school learning environment. These guidelines are intended to maintain a wholesome environment where children can be children without the pressure to hurry up and be young adults.

MATH CELEBRATIONS
In the New Year, a number of our intermediate students committed to the Math Celebrations program which involved regular meeting for ath problem solving. Last week these students attended the Math Celebrations challenge at South Park Elementary to compete against students from other schools. It was a great success. TRADES FAIR
The Indigenous Education Department would like to hear the voices of the families with Indigenous ancestry to hear your thoughts for the future of Indigenous Education in the Delta School District. This survey has 16 questions and should take approximately 10 minutes of your time. Your comments will be used to help us develop the Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement (AEEA) for the next 5 years.
If you complete the survey, your name will be entered into a draw for a mini i-pad to be drawn at a community on May 31, 2017. More information on this will follow. If you would prefer to answer the survey questions over the phone instead of electronically, we will be conducting phone surveys during the month of April after dinner. Someone from the Indigenous Advisory Committee will be calling for this purpose.

TRADES FAIR
You are invited to attend the 4th Annual Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair which will be takingplace on April 27th at the Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta from 9am-8pm. This is a unique and exciting event that gives hands-on experience with dozens of potential career paths. We encourage you to bring your child(ren) with you to the event. All grade 7 and 10 students are already attending the fair during the school day. For older children and teenagers this is a great opportunity to educate themselves about the many meaningful, well-paying and fulfilling jobs available in the trades and technical areas. For younger children, childminding is available from 5-8pm and a food truck will be on site during the evening hours.
The Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair is spearheaded by the Corporation of Delta in partnership with the Delta School District, Vancouver Community College, BCIT, Kwantlen Polytechnic University and local employers. The event is incredibly interactive, featuring ‘Try a Trade’ activities and dynamic presentations on the main stage. The Delta School District will also have a career booth at the event.

READING LINK CHALLENGE
We would like to recognize all of the Grade 4 and 5 students who competed in the Reading Link Challenge this year. The students had a list of 6 books to read and were quizzed with questions to test their comprehension skills. We held our school challenge recently and the teams competed to see who would become the Hawthorne champs. Congratulations to the "The Book Thieves" team that advanced to face 19 other schools in the Delta School District finale. Special thanks to Mrs. Ratzlaff for all of her support in coordinating our efforts!
