TALENT SHOW
Hawthorne will be hosting its annual Talent Show on Thursday, March 12th at approximately 1:45pm.  We will confirm the start time once we have finalized our list of performers.  We will be hosting two rehearsals (Tuesday, March 3 and Wednesday, March 4) in preparation for what should be a fun event.  If your child is participating, please ensure that he/she is prepared with their proper equipment or music for each of the rehearsal times. We hope that your schedule allows you to attend.

HOMEWORK AT HAWTHORNE
We are planning to develop some homework guidelines for teachers, students and parents.  With this in mind,  our January 28th PAC meeting provided the venue for a discussion regarding homework.  There are many perspectives to be considered on this issue and we would like to provide all of our parents with an opportunity for input.  We are asking parents to complete the short survey found at this link.  Thank you to those families who have already responded.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
"Research has shown that SEL is fundamental to children’s social and emotional development – their health, ethical development, citizenship, academic learning, and motivation to achieve.  Social and emotional education is a unifying concept for organizing and coordinating school-based programming that focuses on positive youth development, health promotion, prevention of problem behaviours and student engagement in learning.”   CASEL.org

Hawthorne has been focusing on "self-regulation" or "self-management" for a number of years now.  As adults, we’ve all been there. Tapping our foot repetitively during an important meeting to try and stay awake. Blasting the music in the car to keep from nodding off after a late night up with a sick child. Or, taking a warm bath to soothe frenzied nerves before going to bed. It’s called self-regulation — and most of us engage in these alerting or soothing activities several times a day. Turns out kids need to self-regulate, too. They just need a little extra help identifying when their engine is running too low — or too high — and some strategies for reaching an optimal level of arousal throughout the day.  At school we are using the sensory room to address some of our student needs and teachers are also incorporating strategies into their lessons.  Click here for more information on what parents can do at home to help their child with self-regulation.

PEANUT AWARE
Please note that Hawthorne is a "peanut aware" school.  We have a number of students with a life-threatening allergy to peanuts. As a result, a letter is sent home for those respective classrooms advising them of the safety concern and discouraging the use of peanut products.  We also closely monitor the contents of lunches and  clean surfaces where necessary.  For those students and families dealing with anaphylaxis it is important to know that while Hawthorne is "peanut aware" we cannot claim to be "peanut free" as we are not able to monitor every lunch or food item that arrives at the school.  Thank you for your attention to this issue.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Parents are reminded that we will be hosting kindergarten registration on Tuesday, February 24th from 9am-12pm.  The following documents must be provided:  original birth certificate, proof of residency (property taxes, purchase/rental agreement, care card, immunization record, parent proof of citizenship, medical and emergency contact information).  We will be making the registration package available to parents late next week so that the forms can be completed before being submitted on February 24th.

LICE
Over the course of this school year you may have received a letter advising that lice has been found on a student in your child's classroom.   Within such a letter parents are provided with some information regarding lice checks and the procedures to follow if your child has lice.  For more information on lice you can visit www.fraserhealth.ca.  We would also like to thank Mrs. Barnes and Mrs. Pryce for their work in providing "lice checks" for classes.

MONTHLY VIDEO
On Friday, February 13th we hosted our monthly assembly and celebrated Canada Spirit Day in honour of the 50th anniversary for Canada's flag. You can view the latest video at this link: https://vimeo.com/120099840

GARDENING TIME
The warm temperatures of late have accelerated our gardening plans.  Ms. Bohmert has started to create a planting schedule for classes and we should be getting our hands dirty soon.  We are very thankful for her efforts and would also like to recognize Westcoast Seeds for a generous donation of seeds for our garden. With all of this work soon to be underway, we are asking that students avoid playing in and around the garden boxes before or after school.  Your assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.

Hawthorne will be hosting a "Canada Day" on Friday, Feb. 13th to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Canada's flags.  Staff and students are encouraged to wear their Canadian colours,  particularly anything that features the "maple leaf".  It should be a fun day that we will be able to celebrate during our assembly at 11am.  The Canadian celebration continues on Feb. 14th as Ladner hosts Scotiabank's Hockey Day in Canada.   There will be a number of events hosted in Ladner and much of it will be featured on Sportsnet television.  You can find more details in the flyer found at the end of this blog.

COMMUNITY SURVEY

DeltaKids wants to learn about the experience of families raising children in our communities.  DeltaKids is an organization that is funded by the United Way and the Ministry of Children and Family Development.  The main contributors are members of the Delta Early Childhood Development Committee and the Delta Middle Years Committee.  They have created two brief surveys to get feedback from the community on how "child friendly" Delta is.  You can find the surveys here:  http://deltakids.ca/community-surveys/ .

Wednesday, January 21

During the fall our staff was engaged in a number of discussions regarding homework.  This topic has long been a controversial one in education and we are hoping to engage our parent community and students as well.  With this in mind,  we would like to invite parents to attend the next PAC meeting where Mr. Carruthers will be hosting a "discussion" on the merits of homework. Through these discussions we hope to create "homework guidelines" for teachers, students and parents. The meeting is set for Wednesday, January 28th at 6:30pm in our library and the discussion should run about 45 minutes in length.  If you are planning to attend, please RSVP by sending an email to Mr. Carruthers at mcarruthers@deltasd.bc.ca.

VSO TICKETS
Last week, parents were advised that Hawthorne had been provided with 50 free tickets to a Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presentation on Sunday, February 8th.  There was a lot of interest in this opportunity and we were forced to conduct a draw.  Tickets were tucked into planners and sent home today for those lucky families that had their names drawn.  Thank you for your interest.

MEETING WITH TEACHERS
If you wish to meet with a teacher or visit a classroom, please be sure to set up an appointment prior to arriving at the school.  As well, we would ask that visitors report to the office before heading to the classroom. Parents are always welcome at Hawthorne but impromptu visits can be disruptive to classroom routines.  Thank you in advance for your consideration.

STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES
We will be hosting our student-led conferences on Feb. 18th and 19th. As we get closer to the date,  parents will be provided with instructions on how to book their appointment online through Parent Connect.

WHEELS / DOGS ON THE PLAYGROUND
We would like to remind parents and students to refrain from riding their scooters, bikes, skateboards, etc. while on the school grounds.  Families are also asked to keep their dogs on a tight leash when visiting the school  We have some students who are allergic to dogs while others have a fear of canines.

WELCOME BACK
We hope that you all enjoyed a great holiday spent with family and friends. This looks to be a busy year for Hawthorne as we plan for a variety of events and activities.  We are particularly excited about the Spring Fair that will be hosted on Friday, May 8th. This is a wonderful community event that his held every two years at Hawthorne. Special thanks to Helen Sigouin for spearheading our efforts.  Happy New Year everyone!

HOUSE FIRE IN LADNER
As you are likely aware of by now,  Mrs. Robinson lost her home in a fire on December 30th.  Fortunately, her family was able to escape unharmed but the damage is extensive.  We have been accepting financial donations at the office on behalf of the Robinson family and there is also a website that has been created for those who would like to donate online.   Mrs. Robinson and her family have been very moved by the support shown by the Ladner community.

HOMEWORK
During the fall our staff was engaged in a number of discussions regarding homework.  This topic has long been a controversial one in education and we are hoping to engage our parent community and students as well.  With this in mind,  we would like to invite parents to attend the next PAC meeting where Mr. Carruthers will be hosting a "discussion" on the merits of homework. Through these discussions we hope to create "homework guidelines" for teachers, students and parents. The meeting is set for Wednesday, January 28th at 6:30pm in our library and we hope that you can join us.  In the meantime,  here are some related articles that may be of interest: parent's perspective, the case against homework and the case for/against homework.

TRAFFIC CIRCLE
Please note that community volunteers will be on site (bright yellow jackets) for a number of weeks working in concert with Delta Police's traffic safety program.  They will be monitoring parking/driving habits and issuing warning tickets to any traffic violators.  With this in mind,  please consider the following traffic guidelines.

 DROP-OFF / PICK-UP RULES IN SCHOOL DRIVEWAY:
  • The curved lane in front of the school has been designated for "drop-off and pick-up" only.  This is a FIRE LANE and there is NO PARKING ALLOWED, however, we are allowing only drop-off, pick-up and exiting.  Do not leave your vehicle unattended, including Daycare providers
  • Please note that the elevated area and the end of the roundabout is RESERVED for Daycare Providers
  • Enter the “Drop-off – Pick- up” lane and proceed forward as far as possible to the next car ahead so that other cars can enter the lane
  • Do not leave your vehicle (NO PARKING), as this blocks others from exiting
  • Keep your place in the line up. Do not cut in front of another vehicle
  • Please do not idle your car
  • When driving, please do not use your cell phone
  • Follow the correct flow of traffic indicated by the arrows on the road
  • Children should use the passenger side car doors that open to the sidewalk
Our parking lot is restricted to staff for 30 minutes before and after school. The existing parking stalls are needed for school staff as well as district staff who arrive and leave our school at different times throughout the day. If possible, please consider having your child(ren) walk to school or walk to school with them. We will continue to participate in initiatives and events that promote walking to school, teach environmental responsibility and reduce car dependency.  Our next “Walk to School” event is scheduled for Friday, January 16th.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank the Hawthorne community for its ongoing support of our efforts at the school. The caring culture that exists at Hawthorne is evident in all the work being done by our staff, students and parents.  The new year is already shaping up as a busy one for our school, with countless special events and great opportunities for learning. In the meantime, I hope that the holidays provide you with plenty of time to spend with those closest to you. On behalf of the staff at Hawthorne, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

CHRISTMAS CONCERT
After a sleepless night our students awoke on Friday, December 12th to very favourable reviews for the 2014 Christmas Concert.  By all accounts it was a great success.  Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, friends and relatives who joined us for the show.  Special thanks to our teachers who invested so much time into preparing our students and creating the decorations.  It was a great way to end what has been a challenging year in education.

GRADE 7 BOTTLE DRIVE
Please note that our grade 7 students are hosting a bottle drive on Saturday, January 10th.  They are asking that you please put aside any potential donations until that day when they will be travelling through the neighbourhood.  Proceeds from the bottle drive will support the expenses associated with the grade 7 ski program and year-end activities.

DELTA COMMUNITY ANIMAL SHELTER
Morgan Levins, a grade 6 Hawthorne student, would like to you to
consider the needs of the Delta Community Animal Shelter this Christmas.  DCAS is provides a safe, temporary home that offers medical and emotional support.  They are always in need of financial support and you can find out more at this link:  http://www.delta.ca/services/animal-shelter/overview.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT
Thank you for returning your Christmas Concert reply forms last week.  It looks as though we will be able to accommodate everyone including those people who have made some special requests due to extenuating circumstances.   Please note the following points:
  • the afternoon show will begin  at 1:30pm on December 11th and we encourage our guests to walk to the school
  • the evening show will begin at 6:30pm December 11th and families are asked to leave the cars at home as our parking lot has very limited space
  • students should arrive for the evening show at 6:15pm.  They can enter through the office door and head to their classroom
  • if you are attending the afternoon show, please do your best to ensure that your child is in attendance for the evening show so that we have all the necessary voices
  • the show should run approx. 60 min in length
Students and staff are excited about presenting this year's concert that will feature "Pete the Cat" and his discovery of what Christmas is all about.  It should be a festive occasion and we look forward to seeing you there.

OFFICE DECORATIONS

Hawthorne's staff, students and parents were provided with a treat on Monday morning of this week.  We arrived to find our office decorated as a winter wonderland featuring an igloo, polar bears, snowmen, snowflakes and a Christmas tree.  We would like to thank our parent volunteers (Mrs. Ranu, Mrs. Lawless and Mrs. Pryce) and some student helpers (Gabby and Bailey Ranu, Brittney Salikin from DSS).  It is a great display and the extra efforts are appreciated!

REPORT CARDS
Parents are reminded that report cards will be issued on Wednesday, Dec. 17th for all students.  These progress reports represent a snapshot of where your child is at the moment.  Please keep in mind that this assessment is also based on an abbreviated term.

IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
Please note that we have had some neighbours express concern about the parking and traffic near their homes during the drop-off and pick up times. One neighbour cannot access her driveway because of cars that are parked and left unattended.  We are asking that you be mindful of these concerns.  As well,  please help to keep our students from running on neighbouring lawns.

DELTASSIST
Our "Me To We" student committee has been coordinating the collection of non-perishable food items over the last two weeks.  We are also collecting "loonies" or "twoonies" in support of those Delta residents who are in need.  Our food and money drive will conclude on Friday, December 5th.  Thank you for your support.

HOUR OF CODE
The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries and serves as a 60 minute introduction to computer science designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics.   We are encouraging students, staff and parents to check out the following website for some very easy to follow tutorials: www.hourofcode.com.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT
Further to last week's email, we are pleased to announce that Hawthorne will be hosting its annual Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 11th.  There will be two shows (1:30pm and 6:30pm) and a reply form will be sent home on November 24th so that parents can indicate which show their family plans to attend.  Please keep in mind that due to our gym's capacity,  families will only be able to attend one of the shows and we will be restricting families to 2 tickets for the evening show or 4 tickets for the afternoon performance. We look forward to what should be a fun day of holiday cheer.

DELTASSIST
Our student "We Day" committee will be collecting food and money for Deltassist beginning on Monday, November 24th until Friday December 5th.  We are hoping for donations of non-perishable food items and/or a loonie or toonie to support Delta families in need. Your support would be greatly appreciated. If you, or someone you know, is in need of extra support during the holiday season, please consider Deltassist's Christmas programs.   Registered families can have access to food and toys. You can click here for more details and to check the eligibility requirements.

STUDENT COUNCIL
On Wednesday, November 12th our Student Council met for the first time this year.  Their initial responsibility was hosting a vote in their classroom to choose a new school logo.  All of our students were provided with a vote and the school-wide results were tabulated. In the end, students have chosen the logo on the right.  This logo will be personalized to include "Hawthorne" along with our gold and navy blue colour scheme. We will also be removing the basketball. Our plan is to order school jerseys and offer this new logo on a line of clothing in the spring.

Our students also met to plan a "spirit day" for Friday, November 28th.  We will be asking staff and students to dress up their hair for crazy hair day. Some ideas may include: temporary colour, braiding, spiking, curls, 80's feathering or wearing a wig, fake moustache or beard.  We will have prizes for some lucky participants and it should be a fun day at Hawthorne.

Here is our student council for this year:

Grade 3:  Alexis Valle, Mattais Ljungberg, Dimitri Boufeas, Erin Wingham, Avani Johal

Grade 4: Sean Fraser, Taylor Butcher, Alyssa Aulik, Rio MacDougall

TARDINESS
Each year at this time, we notice an increase in tardiness and we are asking for parents to help us resolve this issue.  Chronic tardiness impacts the learning of not just the student who is late but also the classroom that is interrupted on a regular basis to accommodate a child who is late in arriving.  Your attention to this issue would be greatly appreciated and we are thankful for the vast majority of students who are at school and ready to learn by 8:55am.
