SEATTLE MARINERS VISIT
We are very excited to announce that the Seattle Mariners road show will be stopping by at Hawthorne tomorrow (Wednesday, January 18) to share their special message on "reaching dreams". This is particularly exciting because one of the attendees will be pitcher James Paxton who is actually a former Hawthorne student. We are encouraging students and staff to wear any Mariners gear that they may have.

MOVIE NIGHT
Your PAC will be hosting a FREE Movie Night for families on Friday, January 20th. Doors will open at 6pm with the movie (Finding Dory) set to begin at 6:30pm. There will be a limited concession and families can also bring their own snacks to this event. Please note that parents must be in attendance with their children. We hope that your schedule allows you and your family to join us on Friday night. Special thanks to Ms. Sigouin for coordinating this event!
HEAD LICE
Last week, a number of parents volunteered to conduct a "lice check" at Hawthorne. We'd like to thank Ms. Kolinksy for coordinating their efforts. Our volunteers checked each class and only a few cases were discovered. Here are some considerations for families at home:
- please keep long hair tied up in ponytails, braids or in a bun
- lice tend to avoid certain hair products: hairspray, gel, shampoo with lavender, coconut/tree tea oil
- regularly clean hair care accessories
- regularly clean bedding, coats, hats and upholstery
Head lice is an ongoing concern within the Ladner community but by following some of these preventative measures, we should be able to minimize its impact at Hawthorne. Thank you in advance for your support and feel free to contact Mr. Carruthers if you should have any further questions or suggestions.
If you wish to meet with a teacher or visit a classroom, please be sure to set up an appointment prior to arriving at the school. As well, we would ask that visitors report to the office before heading to the classroom. Parents are always welcome at Hawthorne but impromptu visits can be disruptive to classroom routines. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES
We will be hosting our student-led conferences on Feb. 8th and 9th. As we get closer to the date, parents will be provided with instructions on how to book their appointment online through Parent Connect.
BOOK FAIR
Mrs. Ratzlaff will once again be hosting a Book Fair in our library during Hawthorne's Student-Led Conference on February 8th and 9th. Proceeds will support the purchase of new library resources. Volunteers are needed and parents are asked to contact Mrs. Ratzlaff (jratzlaff@deltasd.bc.ca) if you are able to help out. Thanks in advance for your consideration.
WHEELS / DOGS ON THE PLAYGROUND
We would like to remind parents and students to refrain from riding their scooters, bikes, skateboards, etc. while on the school grounds. Families are also asked to keep their dogs on a tight leash when visiting the school We have some students who are allergic to dogs while others have a fear of canines.
NUT AWARE
As you are
aware, there are students at Hawthorne who have severe food allergies that require us all t otake the
proper precautions. Your attention to
this issue has been greatly appreciated thus far. I am writing to you with regard to “treats”
that may be coming into the classroom in celebration of birthdays or
holidays. If you are preparing treats for
the entire class, we ask that, whenever possible, you consider the following
list as it consists of foods that everyone can enjoy safely:
Cookies
/ Crackers:
Chips ahoy, Chewy Chips Ahoy, Oreos (not
cakesters), Animal Crackers, Premium Plus, Ritz without cheese filling,
Triscuit, Wheat Thins, Stoned Wheat Thins, Teddy Grahams, Peek Freans
(Digestive, Shortbread, Crème-Filled Assorted), Branson’s cookies labeled
“peanut/nut-free”, Chapmans products which say “peanut/nut free”
Cereals:
Waffles, Rice-Krispie Squares, Nutri-grain bars,
Frosted Flakes, Cereal Bars, Fruit Loops, Pop Tarts
Snacks:
Dunkaroos, plain Cheerios, Fruit snacks, Fruit
Rollups, Wagon Wheels,
Chips:
Hostess, Frito-Lay, Humpty Dumpty, Pringles
Candy/Chocolates:
Dubble Bubble, Rockers, Sweet Tarts, Nerds,
Ramblo gum, Skittles, Starburst, Lifesavers, Tootsie Roll, Aero,
Coffee Crisp
Donuts/
Cakes/ Puddings;
Touche cakes/cookies labeled
peanut/nut free, Jello pudding snacks, Kraft pudding snack, Magic Moments
The safest route
is to check the label every time as manufacturers do change the contents of
their products. We realize that you may
not always be able to choose items from this list and we will have alternatives
available for those students who are impacted. Thank you in advance for your consideration and feel free to contact me
at the school if you would like to discuss this further.
