Parents are invited to submit their 2015-2016 classroom placement requests to Mr. Carruthers via email (mcarruthers@deltasd.bc.ca).  The deadline for these requests is Friday, May 29th.  If you have already submitted a request but have not received a reply via email, we ask that you please re-submit your message to ensure that your input is considered.

SPORTS DAY
Sports Day at Hawthorne Elementary School is on Friday, June 5th and we hope that you can join us for the fun.  Students are invited to decorate bikes, trikes, wagons, skateboards, scooters, or other wheeled conveyances to participate in the Wheels Parade which will start at 9:25 a.m.  The Super Heroes theme consists of  GREEN–Boys–Robin & Girls-Raven (from The Teen Titans), Yellow–Boys–Wolverine & Girls–Jean Grey (from The X-Men), BLUE–Boys–Superman & Girls–Wonderwoman (from The Justice League), and RED–Boys–Iron Man & Girls–Black Widow (from The Avengers).  Students are invited to dress up according to their team’s theme however please keep in mind that students will be very active throughout the day.  (A schedule was sent home to parents earlier this week.) Parents are reminded to refrain from smoking on the school grounds while watching Sports Day events and we request that you please leave your dogs at home.

In case of poor weather, Sports Day will be held on Monday, June 8th.  Postponement of Sports Day, if necessary, will be announced over CKNW (980 on your radio).  Students’ Sports Day food orders will be served on Friday, June 5th even if Sports Day is postponed; however, we hope to have the concession stand open on the Monday.

SCHOOL CLOTHING ORDER
We have had a great response to our School Clothing sale.  This order has now been submitted to our supplier and we expect the items to arrive between June 15-19th.  We will notify families when the order is delivered and distribute the clothing items to our students.

Almost three weeks ago Hawthorne hosted a very successful Spring Fair.  This was a great community event as those in attendance enjoyed the warm weather and fun-filled environment.  As you can imagine, this event would not be possible without the hard work of so many individuals.  We would like to thank all the families who attended in support and provided donations of goods or time. We had countless volunteers putting in shifts thoughout the night and we would like to recognize  the organizing committee of  parents :

Jennifer Ranu, May Wong, Leanne Pryce, Amy Lockhart, Katie Barton, Laura Gilbert, Leigh Bartlett, Chris Lawton, Krista Roberts, Jasmeen Dick, Marlene Roberts and Karen Kolinsky.

As well,  a special thank you goes out to Mrs. Kim Barnes and Mrs. Helen Sigouin who provided so much momentum for this event and dedicated a lot of time to making it work.  Well done Hawthorne!

SCHOOL CALENDAR
The 2015-2016 school calendar was sent home this week with our students.  Hopefully this will assist families with their planning for next year.  The calendar will also be posted on our website.

MAY DAYS
Held in Memorial Park just steps from historic Ladner Village, the Ladner Pioneer May Days Fair (est. 1896) is one of British Columbia's largest free family fairs.  This year's festivities were held last weekend. Hawthorne was proudly represented at this event by Jensyn Bourne who joined other girls from around Delta seeking the title of this year's May Day Queen.  The festivities began on Friday evening and continued throughout the weekend with plenty of free family entertainment.

PARENT TEA

The staff at Hawthorne hosted a Parent Volunteer Tea on Tuesday, May 26 to recognize our outstanding parent community.  While not all parents were able to attend we want to thank you for your support of our efforts (classroom helper, parent driver, PAC representative, Hot Lunches, Fruit and Veggie Program,  etc.)   Our school is a better place thanks to the hard work of so many parents who volunteer their time and energy.

STRANGER DANGER
The Delta School District recently sent out a notice regarding  a convicted sex offender now residing in Delta.  This information was based on a press release from the Delta Police department.  Our staff and students were made aware of this news.  We have reviewed our "stranger danger" behaviours (canadasafetycouncil)  and reassured students that the police are doing all that they can to supervise this situation.  We ask that you please follow up at home with your children if you have not already done so.  Thank you.

PEDALHEADS BIKE SAFETY CLINIC
Families are invited to paricipate in the Pedalheads Bike Safety Clinic that is being held free of charge on Wednesday, May 6th from 3:15p-4:30pm.  Students must have a bike, helmet and an accompanying adult.  There will be a number of stations set up for the students to learn various skills and safety techniques.  Special thanks to our parent volunteer, Mrs. Brookes, for coordinating this event.  If you should have any questions feel free to contact her at wilddaisy24@gmail.com.

LICE CHECKS
Head lice is a persistent problem in the Ladner community and it requires diligence to eradicate.  This year we have sent home a number of letters with students who had a case of lice discovered in their classroom.  We are asking that all parents at Hawthorne commit to conducting regular lice checks and follow up with the appropriate procedures if necessary. For more information,  you can click on the following link: http://www.healthlinkbc.ca/healthfiles/hfile06.stm.

In an effort to address this problem, we are asking for parent volunteers to conduct "lice-checks" and follow ups with students or classes. These volunteers would be trained by Hawthorne's Public Health Nurse.  Please contact Mr. Carruthers (mcarruthers@deltasd.bc.ca)  if you are able to volunteer in support of this effort.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
Hawthorne will be hosting a school-wide emergency drill on Thursday, May 7th at approximately 2:20pm.  This exercise will involve the following:  duck and cover in the classroom, evacuation to marshalling area, building assessment, search and rescue.  We should be completed our drill within 20 minutes and it will provide our staff with a good opportunity to review emergency procedures and what students can do to keep themselves safe.  With this in mind,  you may want to follow up with your child after checking out these emergency preparedness tips.

EMERGENCY RELEASES
May 4-8, 2015 is emergency preparedness week in Canada. In the Delta School District we take emergency preparedness very seriously. All of our schools conduct emergency drills throughout the school year. Some of these drills may be full emergency release drills, meaning that parents are involved in the drill because we are practicing how students will be safely released to their parents in the event of a disaster. It is important that if a school has a full release drill, that parents take part. Our students, staff and parents need to be ready in case disaster strikes.

*** It is important that all parents understand that all students, whether in kindergarten or grade 12, will only be dismissed from school in emergency situations to their parents or designated emergency release adult. Students cannot be released to an older sibling who is still under the age of 19. Students will not be allowed to leave school property until a pre-designated adult retrieves them. In order to maintain the safety of your children, there can be no exceptions.

This means that parents need to regularly plan for who will be able to pick-up their child in an emergency situation and that the information needs to be reviewed and updated annually. If both parents do not work close to the school, then they should designate another trusted adult who will, most likely, be in the area if disaster strikes during school hours. Again, this person cannot be an older sibling who is under the age of 19. Parents need to inform the school of who their Emergency Release designated adult is and they need to review this information annually and update it if necessary. They should do so via Parent Connect (instructions are listed below). This needs to be done for each child you have in the Delta School District and you need to inform each child of who his/her Emergency Release adult is.

Parent Connect Instructions:
1.     Sign on to Parent Connect
2.   Click on the BASIC tab on the main toolbar
3.   Click on the blue "Emergency/Out of Prov/Other Contacts" button
4.     Click on the Edit button to the left side of a blank line to add a new record, or on an existing line to change the information. Use the drop down option box to choose the appropriate option for this record; choose ER-Emergency Release. Fill in all of the fields.
5.     Click the Save button to update the changes. If you close the screen or go to another screen before saving, the changes will be lost.
Note: This needs to be completed separately for each child.
For more information about emergency preparedness in the Delta School District visit the DeltaPrepared website: facilities.deltasd.bc.ca/deltaprepared

PLAYGROUND NOISE
Please note that we have received a noise complaint from some of our neighbouring homes as they have noticed an increase in noise outside of school hours.  Of particular concern is the "squealing" that can happen with our younger students on the new playground near the kindergarten classes.  This playground is in very close proximity to  the fence line.  We will be addressing this issue with our students and ask that families are mindful of our neighbours when playing on the grounds.  Thank you.

YOGA IN THE PARK
Families are invited to enjoy some YOGA in the PARK on Sunday, May 10 from 1-3pm at Memorial Park.  These classes will be free of charge and located close to the playground with small "kid-friendly" refreshments available.  For more information you can contact jridley@pcrs.ca.

TRACK AND FIELD
Our students and staff began training last week for the track and field season.  Coaches have been working with students in a number of areas:  sprints, distance, relays, long jump, shot put and softball throw.  Our first "mini-meet" will take place at 3:20pm on Tuesday, April 21st at Delta Senior Secondary. This will be an opportunity for some of our students to practice on the track but only a few events will be run:  100m sprints for gr. 6/7, 60m Shuttle and 60 m Sprint for our gr. 4/5 students.   The regional track meet is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5th with the district event taking place on Thursday, May 14th.  We hope that your schedule allows you to attend some of these events to support the team.  Thank you to all of our coaches!

DRESS CODE
With warmer temperatures looming, students are often tempted to wear beach-like clothing to school. Please help us to maintain an age- appropriate dress code for all grades at Hawthorne by ensuring that strapless, spaghetti-strapped, midriff-like tops and “too-short” shorts or skirts are not worn to school. The midriff should be covered at all times. As well, T-shirts with contentious slogans may be deemed  inappropriate. We wish to work with the parent community in helping to ensure the students wear clothing that is respectful of and appropriate to the school learning environment. These guidelines are intended to maintain a wholesome environment where children can be children without the pressure to hurry up and be young adults.

MATH CELEBRATIONS
A number of our students have spent the last few weeks preparing for the Delta School District's Math Celebrations event.  Our Hawthorne will join other South Delta elementary schools on the afternoon of Thursday, April 23rd at Port Guichon Elementary.  We wish them well as they test their math skills and tackle some challenging word problems.  Special thanks to Mrs. Retallick for coordinating our efforts.

TRADES FAIR
You are invited to attend the 3rd Annual Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair which will be takingplace on April 30th at the Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta from 9am-8pm.  This is a unique and exciting event that gives hands-on experience with dozens of potential career paths.  We encourage you to bring your child(ren) with you to the event. All grade 7 and 10 students are already attending the fair during the school day. For older children and teenagers this is a great opportunity to educate themselves about the many meaningful, well-paying and fulfilling jobs available in the trades and technical areas.  For younger children, childminding is available from 5-8pm and a food truck will be on site during the evening hours.

The Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair is spearheaded by the Corporation of Delta in partnership with the Delta School District, Vancouver Community College, BCIT, Kwantlen Polytechnic University and local employers. The event is incredibly interactive, featuring ‘Try a Trade’ activities and dynamic presentations on the main stage. The Delta School District will also have a career booth at the event.

We invite you to have a look at the Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair website for more information: www.delta.ca/careerfair

COIN DRIVE
Hawthorne's "Me to We" student committee hosted a very successful coin drive prior to Spring Break.  Thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser. With your help we were able to raise almost $2000 in support of the Tekera Primary School in Uganda.  We hope to provide them with clean drinking water, medicine, eye glasses, shoes and many other items in support of their daily life.   Our efforts are being coordinated through ICEF Canada (http://icefcanada.org). Thank you to Mrs. Retallick for coordinating our efforts.  We would also like to recognize a few students who went above and beyond in support of this worthy cause.  Jake Williams and his sister, Hannah, set up a lemonade stand.  Aidan Pau raised over $100 through his Boy Scouts troupe. Jacob Retallick held a birthday party and donated half of his birthday money.  Elizabeth Graham also set up a Lemonade stand.   Thanks again for your support of this fundraising initiative.

TRACK AND FIELD
Track and Field practices are about to begin to prepare our participating students for the May 5 Regional Track Meet.  We will meet with all of the interested students on Thursday, April 2nd for a preliminary session and our full schedule of practices will begin next week.   Please note the following points regarding Track and Field:

  • students are required to attend 80% of the practices in order to participate in the Regional Track Meet (there may be some exceptions due to extenuating circumstances)
  • all students who meet the attendance requirement will be placed into an event for the regional meet
  • students who are training for a "field" event must also attend one running practice per week
  • there will be a Ladner Mini-Meet hosted on Tuesday, April 21 from 3:30-4:15pm at DSS that will feature a 60m race for gr.4/5 students and a 100m race for gr. 6/7 students

AUTISM SPEAKS and LIGHT IT UP BLUE
Light It Up Blue is a unique global initiative to help raise awareness about the growing public health concern that is autism.  This event was launched by Autism Speaks in 2010 in support of World Autism Awareness Day which takes place each year on April 2.  On this day, over 3000 structures around the world will be illuminated in blue to shine a bright light on autism.  We would like Hawthorne to participate in this day by having staff and students wear blue.  Students will be reminded of the details when we return from Spring Break.

READY, SET, LEARN
Hawthorne Elementary will be hosting a Ready, Set, Learn event for "3 year olds" and their parents.  This is happening in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Children and Family Development and the Ministry of Health Services.  These organizations have joined forces to celebrate literacy and assist you in the teaching role that you play for your child. British Columbia’s Ready, Set, Learn program recognizes that families need positive connections with the school system and community agencies that provide early childhood development resources, support, and services.

Hawthorne's event is scheduled from 9:30-11am on Friday, April 10th.  This session will begin with brief introductions followed by hands-on-learning opportunities for the children that will model fun and effective literacy strategies. A "nut-free" snack and drink will be provided during the session.  We will also include a brief explanation of the kindergarten program and discuss strategies that will help to prepare your preschooler for elementary school.  Those who attend will receive a literacy kit for use at home.

For planning purposes we ask that you please advise Mrs. Fast  (jfast@deltasd.bc.ca) if you are planning to participate.  Please note that parents are required to attend with their child.  We hope to see you on April 10th.

HOMEWORK AT HAWTHORNE
We are planning to create some homework guidelines for teachers, students and parents.  With this in mind, we have designed a parent survey to gather input. You can find the survey at this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KYNRRD9. This link will closed in two weeks and our staff will  then sift through the feedback. Thank you to those families who have already responded.

PINK SHIRT DAY
On February 25th  students and staff were wearing pink to show that we are all working together to prevent bullying in our school, communities and online.  This initiative began in a Nova Scotia high school when a boy was called "gay" after wearing a pink shirt to school.  His friends and others decided to wear pink shirts the next day to take a stand against bullying.  At Hawthorne we work closely with students, staff and parents to minimize the impact of bullying at our school.    We want every child to attend school without the threat of verbal, physical and psychological abuse.  If you should ever have concerns regarding bullying please contact your child's teacher or Mr. Carruthers at the office.

PARENTING WORKSHOPS AT HAWTHORNE
Your Hawthorne PAC is working with Deltassist to present a series of free parenting workshops for parents of children ages 5-12 years.  These sessions will be held on consecutive weeks in our school from 6-7:30pm. Here is an overview of the session followed by registration information:
