March 30th

TRACK AND FIELD
Track and Field practices are about to begin to prepare our participating students for the May 11th Regional Track Meet.  We met with interested students today for a preliminary session and our full schedule of practices will begin next week.  Please note the following points regarding Track and Field:
  • gr. 4-7 are invited to attend  running practices held from 8-8:50am on Wednesday and Friday mornings
  • students are required to attend 80% of the practices in order to participate in the Regional Track Meet (there may be some exceptions due to extenuating circumstances)
  • all students who meet the attendance requirement will be placed into an event for the regional meet
  • there will be a Ladner Mini-Meet hosted later in April at DSS that will feature a 60m race for gr.4/5 students and a 100m race for gr. 6/7 students
AUTISM SPEAKS and LIGHT IT UP BLUE
Light It Up Blue is a unique global initiative to help raise awareness about the growing public health concern that is autism.  This event was launched by Autism Speaks in 2010 in support of World Autism Awareness Day which takes place each year on April 2.  On this day, over 3000 structures around the world will be illuminated in blue to shine a bright light on autism.  We encourage families to dress up in blue on Sunday, April 2nd to help recognize this initiative.  Thank you in advance for your support.

READY, SET, LEARN
The Delta School District will be hosting a Ready, Set, Learn event for Ladner  children who will be turning 3,4 or 5 in 2017.  The event will be held on April 11th from 1-2:30pm at the Delta Manor Education Centre. This is happening in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Children and Family Development and the Ministry of Health Services. These organizations have joined forces to celebrate literacy and assist you in the teaching role that you play for your child. British Columbia’s Ready, Set, Learn program recognizes that families need positive connections with the school system and community agencies that provide early childhood development resources, support, and services.

This session will begin with brief introductions followed by hands-on-learning opportunities for the children that will model fun and effective literacy strategies. A "nut-free" snack and drink will be provided during the session.  We will also include a brief explanation of the kindergarten program and discuss strategies that will help to prepare your preschooler for elementary school.  Those who attend will receive a free book and enjoy a presentation by children's entertainer, Will Stroet.

TALENT SHOW
On Thursday, March 9th we hosted our Talent Show and were treated to a great variety of performances.  Our participants are to be commended for their efforts and the positive risk-taking that they modelled for the rest of the school. SPRING BREAK
Families are reminded that our Spring Break begins on Monday, March 13th.  Students and staff will return to school on Monday, March 27th.  We hope that the break provides all of you with plenty of time for fun and relaxation.

REPORT CARDS
Parents are advised that report cards are being sent home today.  Once again our kindergarten to grade 4 students will be receiving the new "pilot" report card which continues to take shape.  The second term edition attempts to highlight the learning focus, student abilities and next steps.  The Delta School District is gathering parent feedback and survey forms will be provided after Spring break.

TALENT SHOW
Hawthorne will be hosting its annual Talent Show on Thursday, March 9th at approximately 1:30pm.    We have had a great response so far and more participants than any other year. If your child is participating, please ensure that he/she is prepared with their proper equipment, outfit or music for the show. We hope that your schedule allows you to attend.

VISITORS
Please consider the following when visiting Hawthorne:
  • be sure to check in at the office whenever you visit Hawthorne during the day so that our office staff can provide you with a visitor's badge.
  • if you would like to meet with a teacher,  please book in advance as impromptu meetings in the hallway can lead to delays in the classroom
  • student lunches can be dropped off on the table provided outside the office
  • our library will be open to families at 8:30am from Tuesday-Thursday
Thank you in advance for your consideration as we all works to foster a safe and welcoming school community.
